Community Mural at 35 & Chicago – PPNA Sponsored Project
Submittted by Kathleen Sullivan
Powderhorn Resident and Organizer at the Paradise Community Garden
There is a wonderful mural project currently underway on the Atlantic Press building, 35th and Chicago, south side of the building.
Victor Yepez, the muralist, is an art teacher at Christo Rey high school, originally from Ecuador, and an extremely warm human being. Becky Timm, E.D. at PPNA, set the stage by facilitating connections between Victor and community groups like Paradise Garden.
Victor has done an outstanding job of welcoming the community to participate in creating the mural. He came to Paradise Garden and personally invited the gardeners to paint, which we did, both Saturday and Sunday. He’s successfully included passers-by, who stay for an hour or several. Pillbury House youth are planning to paint this week.
Passing motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians give continual affirmation of the work. Many accept the invitation to join in. Victor makes everyone feel important and talented … which we are, of course! He’s been taking photos, and maybe he’d share them for your publication.
Stop by and see the transformation. Grab a brush and have a part in it. You’ll feel good supporting something so positive happening just two blocks from Friday night’s tragedy. Thank you!
